Tanzania is an East African country characterised by vast wilderness areas and a narrow coastal plain on the eastern seaboard of the Indian Ocean. The coastline of Tanzania Mainland is ±800 km long, extending from the Kenyan border in the north to the Mozambican border in the south. Tanganyika and Zanzibar united on 26th April 1964, forming the United Republic of Tanzania, now home to ±65 million people, of whom ±½ million live in the capital city of Dodoma. Dodoma is considered the official capital of Tanzania, but Dar es Salaam remains the political and business centre. Tanzania is famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration – each year, millions of animals such as wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle make their way across this land in search of water and fresh pasture, braving the raging Mara River, filled with waiting crocodiles. The plains of Serengeti National Park – a World Heritage Site and 7th world wonder populated by the “big five” game (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino) – and Kilimanjaro National Park  – are also found in Tanzania. Ernest Hemingway wrote about the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro – standing ±5,895 meters above sea level, this mountain is the tallest in Africa, and the highest freestanding mountain in the world. In fact nearly 30% of Tanzania is National Parks, including the Selous Game Reserve, the world’s largest game reserve, boasting more than 120,000 elephants, 160,000 buffalos, 2000 rhinos and large concentrations of hippos, crocodiles and wild dogs. Other must-see destinations are the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Tanganyika.  Offshore lie the tropical islands of Zanzibar, with stunning beaches, and Mafia, with a marine park home to whale sharks and coral reefs.
