WHAT INCOME IS TAXABLE IN Mauritania:

Any income earned in the form of cash, wages, salary, overtime, leave pay or payment in lieu of leave, commissions, gratuity, bonus, or any amount that has benefited the employee.  All income will be taxed in accordance with the law and the final payroll issued monthly.

What income is exempt from taxes in Mauritania:

Public and private pensions, as well as life annuities are taxable at progressive rates if any of the following circumstances exist: The beneficiary is domiciled in Mauritania. The beneficiary is domiciled outside Mauritania, and the debtor is established in Mauritania.

The following types of income are exempt from tax: Compensation and allowances relating to governmental or local representative duties. Family allowances, family assistance allowances, and all other allowances added or paid depending on the family situation. A fixed amount of MRU 6,000.

  • The legal working time cannot exceed 40 hours per week, nor 8 hours per day.
  • Overtime is paid at a premium of 150% of the hourly pay rate.

CAN YOU GIVE FRINGE BENEFITS IN Mauritania:

Yes you can but keep in mind that Fringe Benefits will be subject to employee PAYE tax.  Only benefits that cannot be converted to cash will not be subject to tax.  If the employer covers some of the employees expenses i.e. mobile phone then it must be subject to PAYE tax and either the employer will cover this portion for the employee or the employee will bear the PAYE tax.

Mandatory Probation period of Mauritania:

  • The mandatory probation period in Mauritania cannot exceed 6 months.
  • During the probationary period, employers have the opportunity to assess the employee’s suitability for the job.
  • If the employer decides to terminate the employee during the probation period, they must follow the notice requirements as per the employment contract.
